BAY2K is an independent organization formed in August 1998 to develop resilient and sustainable community responses to the Year 2000 computer problem by providing information, contacts and dialogue.

The International Institute for Ecological Agriculture announces the following Permaculture classes:

Y2K Gardening Class

No need for hysteria, it's just common sense. Since agriculture depends on thousands of imbedded computer chips (commercial irrigation systems, transportation, refrigeration and more) and since most grocery stores only stock about a week's worth of fresh foods at a time, any Y2K breakdowns will affect the food supply. Y2K gardening is something you'll want to do every year -- even after the "bug" that everyone is talking about passes.

In this Y2K workshop, you will learn :
Special techniques for creating an extended growing season
How to plan and plant a supply of food that will tide you over
Urban gardening. Even if your garden is only a few containers on the fire escape, you can grow enough food for yourself. (A 5 gallon bucket can yield over 100 carrots.) Offered only 5 times throughout the summer. Please reserve space for yourself and friends now.
The full day class is $107.

Two Week Permaculture Certification

In this course you will learn every facet of Permaculture and ecological agriculture from the best in the field. (Permaculture is a copyrighted word and in order to use the word for your own personal needs, you must be certified). The Institute's course is the most extensive, in-depth, hands-on and personal.

After a full day of learning, relaxed evenings often bring even more presentations. The group will practice new skills through the creation of a group design effort. While this course is rich enough in material for professionals, it is presented in an easy, understandable format for the lay student.

Whether you want to add Permaculture skills to your already existing landscaping, farming, ranching, environmental, teaching or building business, start a Permaculture business, help communities to feed themselves efficiently, earn a decent income on your own land, or just garden and live this lifestyle in your own backyard, this class promises to be life-changing!

Dates: August 1 - 15, Sonoma County, CA, 20 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge. Registration is limited, as are some scholarships. Tuition is $697. Logistics, food and camping/lodging is extra.

Black Foot Nation Reservation Two Week Certification

A very rare opportunity! Students will live on the one- million acre Black Foot Nation Reservation at the foot of Glacier National Park in Montana while learning side-by- side with Native American reservation residents.

Teachers:

--Dave Blume, I.I.E.A. founder, trained and certified by Bill Mollison. Dave is a working Permaculture farmer.
--Starhawk, popular visionary.
--Bob Theis, Berkeley sustainable living architect and straw bale construction expert.
--Black Foot Nation Tribal Elders.
--Earnest Callenbach, author of the famed Ecotopia.
--Larry Korn , certified Permaculturist , who translated Masanobu Fukuoka's important work, One Straw Revolution.

You will learn every facet of Permaculture in this course.
There will also be information about how to reduce the reservation residents' high incidence of diabetes and prepare for the melting off of the glaciers, which supply the reservation with water. For each paying non-reservation student, a Native American reservation resident will be able to attend this important, lifesaving class at no charge. Tentative dates for this event are late September/early October. This very special event is sure to sell out fast, so please let us know if you are interested as soon as possible!

Permaculture Fundamentals

New this year: A six day jam-packed introduction to permaculture Due to big demand from everyone from professionals to backyard gardeners who want to learn or extend their knowledge of Permaculture but don't have the time or the need to become certified, we are now presenting this course.

Students will learn all the basics and will be treated to the same high caliber learning experience as in the certification course. We offer this class only two times a year. at the gorgeous Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California and at I.I.E.A.'s own Community Supported Agriculture Project, known as Our Farm, in Woodside, CA.

At I.I.E.A. June 18 ?-22; $497.

At Esalen Institute on Sept. 19-24; $485.

Both prices include room and food.

Be a Farmer for a Week

Combining learning, real farming work and a whole lot of fun, this is Gardening Summer Camp for Adults, as well as the whole family. Working at Our Farm site, you will learn by doing under the expert guidance of Farmer Dave and his Dad, Farmer Jerry (both father and son are Ecological Biologists).

The pair will walk you through planting, plant care for the growing crop, low cost greenhouse construction, terracing hillsides, harvesting, and post-harvesting handling. There is a large variety of produce grown here, including some not found in your local markets.

This is hands-on experience, and a whole lot more than what you'll get from just reading about great gardening. Camp under the stars, eat great organic food, learn by doing. Four special sessions are planned, so please sign up now. Tuition, food and lodging is $477. Ask about family discounts (children 9 or older please) .
