But every day there are millions everywhere who are doing little and big things to create a more peaceful, just and sustainable world. As we approach a New Millennium, the wish for Peace On Earth is growing stronger. A vast, as yet un-named Peace On Earth Movement is converging from many different directions.

Another conference in September around the NGO conference at the United Nations will bring more youth networks together. The ultimate goal is to create a permanent voice of youth at the United Nations, and a Youth Assembly is a major component of the People's Assembly plans. The Decade for a Culture of Peace & Nonviolence
The United Nations will launch it's Culture of Peace program for the Year 2000 on September 14, 1999 - the International Day of Peace. During the CountUP to 2000 and throughout this year of education and transformation, events and activities for a better world will be taking place all around the world.
UNESCO and the Appeal of the Nobel Laureates for the Children of the World were also successful in securing the United Nations' declaration of the first decade of the 21st century as The International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World. An action plan is being developed to engage all sectors of society to work towards the transformation of our culture of violence to a culture of peace.

MILLENNIUM PEOPLE'S ASSEMBLY
There will be MANY transforming events and activities during the Year 2000, but one of the major highlights will be the Millennium People's Assembly. A special UN Millennium Assembly will meet in September 2000 to discuss the United Nations' role in the 21st century. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called for a companion Millennium People's Assembly. The People's Assembly will meet earlier in 2000 and will present the General Assembly with a Voice of the People -- concrete ideas and agendas for the UN Millennium Assembly.
Many hope that preparations for the Millennium People's Assembly will lead to a permanent People's Assembly. Major People's Assembly preparation forums will take place at The Hague Appeal for Peace 1999.

MILLENNIUM MEAL
On January 1, 2000, the first day of the United Nations International Year of Thanksgiving and of the Culture of Peace, people around the world are invited to gather in their homes or with their neighbors, friends, or congregations to partake of a meal that is symbolically meant to be the first meal shared by the entire human family.
Everyone is also asked to match the cost of their own millennium meal in a gift to the needy. Some will contribute to trans-national NGOs, some to local soup kitchens, and some by cooking a meal for a family next door.
The Millennium Meal is something everyone can share in. This is not charity - this is a worldwide celebration-and every person in the world is a host and also a guest. The monumental - but not impossible - task of organizing the global Millennium Meal will also give everyone a constructive way to prepare for Y2K in their own communities. If the human family adopts the concept of breaking bread together at a Millennium Meal to greet the start of the 2000's, we implicitly commit to a constructive, partnership-based response to any problems arising from Y2K-related computer failures.
The Millennium Meal will strengthen our resolve to end hunger and poverty once and for all in the 21st century. Let January 1, 2000 be remembered throughout the next millennium as the day we first united humankind in one action and one thought: that of sharing.

You can print out a letter of support on the http://www.oneday.net website in the following languages: SPANISH, PORTUGUESE, GERMAN, DUTCH & ENGLISH. More translations needed.
Text of the Letter:
The UN declared 2000 as the International Year for a Culture of Peace. What better way to begin this year of education and transformation than with a day of peace. Celebrities, more than 25 world leaders, nearly 1000 organizations in 130 nations & ordinary people in schools and communities throughout the world are asking us to declare & celebrate a PAUSE FOR PEACE on New Year's Eve 1999 followed by One Day In January 1, 2000 - a Global Ceasefire & a worldwide day of peace in our homes, our neighborhoods and between nations!
This is a simple campaign, but when we live in peace for ONE DAY, we will see that a more peaceful planet IS possible if we work together, one day at a time. With "peace on earth" as a priority for our global community, we will be able to work out all of our problems, together. During the CountUP to One Day In Peace (and Beyond...) we can make EVERY DAY COUNT for a better world!
Please support this global campaign, which is chaired by Dr. Robert Muller, Chancellor of the UN's University for Peace. Urge your city or town to declare a Proclamation for One Day In Peace, January 1, 2000. Copy this form & invite other organizations & institutions to Co-Sponsor the One Day In Peace campaign. There is NO financial obligation to be a CoSponsor!
